Keith Thirion is the Director of Outreach at Alliance for Justice. He joined AFJ after serving as the Director of Advocacy & Programs and then Acting Director of Equality Maryland. He played a lead role in passing the state transgender anti-discrimination law and directed the campaign to deny opponents signatures for a repeal referendum. He also directed EQMD’s programs transitioning from legislative victories to addressing discrimination faced particularly by LGBT communities of color, transgender people, and youth. He worked with schools, government agencies, businesses, and faith communities to guide policy change and conduct trainings in policies and best practices in creating LGBT-inclusive environments.
Before Equality Maryland, Keith worked on climate change campaigns with the Chesapeake Climate Action Network. As the Virginia Field Director, he managed the organizing team to advance renewable energy policies and counter the power of the commonwealth’s biggest polluters. He led field campaigns to defeat the largest proposed coal plant in Virginia, expose corporate greenwashing by the state’s most powerful utility, develop legislative champions, and build networks of climate activists and coalition partners across the state.
Keith previously worked on multiple ballot initiative campaigns, including Proposition 8 in Los Angeles, and as an Organizing Fellow with the National LGBTQ Task Force.
Keith graduated summa cum laude from American University with a B.A. in Political Science and CLEG: Communications, Law, Economics and Government.
