Advocacy Programs Counsel

AFJ is seeking an attorney for its national office in Washington, DC.  The attorney will be part of AFJ’s Advocacy Programs, serving organizations and activists across the country.  Through its Advocacy Programs, AFJ works to increase nonprofit participation in advocacy and lobbying by providing workshops, technical assistance, web resources and easy-to-read publications to a broad range of nonprofit organizations (including foundations) across the country.

Position

The Counsel reports to Legal Director, Advocacy Programs and will implement a wide range of activities that advance the program activities.

 

Responsibilities

  • Master the current federal tax and federal election law for tax exempt organizations and translate the material for a non-legal audience.  The candidate will be responsible for continuing their education in federal tax and federal election law.
  • Conduct workshops for nonprofit organizations and foundations on federal tax and federal election rules governing their ability to participate in public policy.  Also be active in the publicity/outreach needed to produce the desired audience for workshops.
  • Provide technical assistance to nonprofits and foundations on federal tax and federal election law.
  • Represent the organization at conferences of nonprofits and foundations.
  • Write, in collaboration with AFJ staff and/or outside attorneys, relevant technical assistance guides, articles, op-eds, regulatory comments and occasional amicus briefs.  
  • Participate in federal tax and federal election law public policy and other subjects as they may arise.
  • Collaborate with staff from other AFJ programs (including our Judicial Selection and Access to Justice Projects, as well as Outreach and Communications) to deliver appropriate program content.     
  • Work with both AFJ’s Oakland and DC staff on program activities and special events, .
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Law degree, bar membership and 1-3 years experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Experience conducting training programs and working with coalitions.
  • Experience with lobbying or nonprofit advocacy programs preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including the ability to write clearly and quickly.
  • Travel approximately 50-60 days per year.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of individuals and interests.
  • Knowledge of federal tax and election law; some familiarity with state lobbying and elections law and experience lobbying for a nonprofit a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Commitment to social justice causes.

Compensation range is $58,000-$62,000 per year based on experience.
