Daren GarshelisCounsel, West Coast Office Daren Garshelis is Counsel in the Alliance for Justice West Coast office. He works on AFJ’s Nonprofit Advocacy Project, assisting nonprofit organizations in expanding their capacity to influence public policy. Daren comes to AFJ with a background providing pro bono legal assistance in Spanish. Prior to joining AFJ, he worked in New York City at Paul, Hastings, Janofsky and Walker LLP, where, in addition to practicing complex commercial litigation, he represented a Guatemalan juvenile asylum-seeker in immigration court, and at El Centro de Educación de Trabajadores, where he provided free legal consultations in Spanish to underserved members of the community. As a law student in Washington, D.C., Daren aided Spanish-speaking immigrants in removal proceedings with the Capitol Area Immigrant Rights (CAIR) Coalition, and the National Coalition for Refugee and Immigrant Children (NCRIC). Daren holds a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, and a B.A., magna cum laude, from the University of St. Thomas (MN). He has also studied law at Universidad Torcuato di Tella in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
