Diane Shust

Diane Shust serves as the National Education Association's Director of Government Relations, overseeing close to 50 legislative and political staff. Previously, she served as NEA's Manager of Federal Relations, directing a staff of six lobbyists working on behalf of NEA's 2.7 million members on education, child advocacy, civil rights and "member benefit" issues such as health and social security. Before coming to NEA, she worked as Legislative Counsel to Congressman George Miller (D-CA) where she handled his Education and Labor Committee work and was Counsel to the House of Representatives Select Committee on Children, Youth, and Families. As the first Senior Supervisor Attorney with the Juvenile Services Program of the Public Defender Service, Washington, D.C., Ms. Shust developed, implemented, and supervised a new advocacy program to meet the special needs of incarcerated children in the City's three juvenile facilities. She also represented over 100 indigent juveniles in delinquency cases in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Ms. Shust taught at the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University, and is currently teaching at the Georgetown University of Law Center. Ms. Shust clerked for The Honorable David L. Norman, Associated Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. She has been a contributing author to the District of Columbia Practice Manual, and the Criminal Practice Institute Manual in the area of juvenile delinquency practice and procedure.
