January 29, 2009, Washington, DC—Alliance for Justice praises President Barack Obama for signing the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law.
"This is a victory for everyone who cares about fairness and equality," said Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron. "The first law signed by President Obama shows that this White House is committed to justice for people who work hard every day."
"We owe a debt of enormous gratitude to Lilly Ledbetter," Aron said. "This woman from Gadsden, Alabama never gave up the fight, despite enormous odds and personal sacrifice. She stood up for millions of working Americans, even though she will not personally benefit from the law the bears her name.
"Lilly Ledbetter shows that we can win if we are willing to fight back. We thank Lilly for leading the way to fairness and justice for all," continued Aron.
"The groundswell of popular support for the Ledbetter Act, which corrects the injustice done to working Americans in the Supreme Court's 5-4 decision in Ledbetter v. Goodyear, signals that the American people want judges who are committed to the core constitutional values of liberty, equality and justice for all," concluded Aron.
Alliance for Justice also praises Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA), Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Senator Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Representative George Miller (D-CA) and all those senators and representatives who tirelessly worked to pass the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
