Washington, DC — Today, March 2, 2010 the Senate confirmed Judge Barbara Milano Keenan to a seat on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals by a vote of 99-0. Republicans raised no issues or concerns with Judge Keenan's record, but despite the fact that she was reported out of committee unopposed, they forced a cloture vote on her confirmation.
"This is the epitome of Republican Senators using procedural rules to obstruct uncontroversial nominees for no reason other than pure partisan politics,” stated Nan Aron, president of Alliance for Justice. "Judge Keenan was nominated on September 14 2009; she passed unanimously through committee on October 29, but was forced to spend 124 days awaiting confirmation due to a silent, anonymous hold. Her unanimous confirmation today pulls the curtain back on Republican tactics, revealing that there was no genuine opposition to the nominee, just a genuine desire to ground the process to a halt."
