November 5, 2008, Washington, DC—Though the ballots are counted, work remains to be done. The next administration faces many critical questions, not least among them the future of the federal judiciary. There are currently 15 appeals court and 36 district court vacancies anticipated as of January 20, 2009.
"Over the next four years, not only can President-Elect Obama put the brakes on the Bush administration's concerted campaign to reshape the law, he can restore fairness and respect for core constitutional values to our nation's courts," said Nan Aron, president of Alliance for Justice.
"As the hard work of the transition begins and the short lists are compiled, the Obama administration should look to nominate individuals who come from diverse backgrounds and different experiences—such as governors, attorneys general and state legislators." Aron continued. "But most importantly, President-Elect Obama should nominate people with an expansive vision of constitutional freedoms and equality," concluded Aron.
