 Summary:

This resource consists of a breakdown of seven core components of community organizing, along with a short discussion of the evaluation issues related to each component.

 Detailed Description:

Based on interviews with nonprofit leaders, evaluators, and funders, as well as a survey of the community organizing literature, the author identifies and defines seven core components of community organizing work.  These components are:

  §  Development of Power

§  Development of Constituent Leadership and Power

  §  Participation and Membership

  §  Organizing "Wins"

§  Meaningful Impact of Organizing Work

  §  Organizational Capacity and Management

  §  Ongoing Reflection and Innovation

For each of these core components, the author provides a brief discussion of the keys issues and implications that the core component has for the evaluation of organizing.  These discussions provide potential evaluators and practitioners of community organizing with some grounding not only in critical issues related to the field, but specifically with these issues in an evaluation context.
