 Summary:

This resource documents the evaluation of voter registration efforts.

 Detailed Description:

This report looks at the results of voter registration work (a subset of community organizing) done by a variety of local and national groups during the 2004 election cycle.  It documents 10 best practices learned from the voter registration efforts of 2004, ranging from personal relationships being the best mechanism for voter registration, to integrating voter engagement into ongoing organizing campaigns.  Each of the best practices is discussed in detail.  Additionally, the authors recommend integrating electoral work with issue organizing, effectively using voter files, and increasing the coordination of voter engagement as important prospective lessons from 2004.  The report also contains recommendations how funders can more effectively support voter engagement beyond sporadic funding for presidential election cycles.

This case study looks at a particular subset of community organizing but may be helpful to users interested in how funders assess the results of organizing work and translate these results into practical recommendations for funders and grantees alike.
