Forced Arbitration is taking away one of your most basic rights; join us in fighting back.

In our democracy, the courts hold out the promise of safeguarding everyone, regardless of wealth and power. But that fundamental promise of equal justice under law is facing a severe threat.

Buried in everyday agreements for products, services, and jobs is fine print saying when you are harmed, you can’t go before an impartial jury or judge. Instead, these forced arbitration clauses send you to a decision-maker picked by the company that wronged you. Not surprisingly, one study found that arbitrators rule for companies over consumers 94 percent of the time. And you’re stuck with their decision because there’s no appeal. It’s a rigged system that helps companies evade responsibility for violating anti-discrimination, consumer protection, and public health laws.

AFJ’s 2014 First Monday campaign educates the public about forced arbitration and provides tools to help individuals stand up for their rights.  As a part of the campaign, AFJ released an award-winning short documentary, Lost in the Fine Print, that activists nationwide are using as a tool to demystify this issue and galvanize others to take action.

Narrated by former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, Lost in the Fine Print tells the story of three everyday people who found themselves trapped in a system that favors large and powerful companies at the expense of hardworking Americans. But it also tells the story of how they’re determined to keep fighting forced arbitration, and how important it is for all of us to take a stand. Lost in the Fine Print is a game-changing film featuring Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., Congressman Hank Johnson, D-Ga., Paul BlandDeepak Gupta, and others!

Together we can send a clear message that it’s unacceptable for corporations to use forced arbitration to duck accountability for their actions and exempt themselves from the civil rights and consumer laws that are the foundation of a just society. Sign up below to learn more about this campaign or to host a screening of the film.
