WASHINGTON, D.C., March 15, 2016: Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron released the following statement in response to today’s nomination of Rebecca Haywood to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit:

Alliance for Justice commends President Obama for his nomination of Rebecca Haywood to a seat on the Third Circuit. Ms. Haywood, who would be the first African-American woman to serve on this circuit, has substantial experience in federal appellate practice from her duties in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania, and is yet another example of the president’s historic efforts to bring diversity to the federal bench.

We urge the Senate Judiciary Committee to promptly consider her nomination, as well as those of the five other circuit court nominees who have yet to receive a hearing, let alone a confirmation vote. The growing list of pending nominees is a reminder that the Republicans’ refusal to act on a Supreme Court nominee is just another example of the dereliction of duty that has characterized this Senate majority’s approach to judicial nominations. There is no excuse for the sluggish consideration of the 44 district and circuit court nominees currently awaiting consideration; the fact that not a single judge has been confirmed since February 11, even though 12 district court nominees have received committee approval and are ready for a final vote; and the unconscionable reality that only 16 judges have been confirmed by this Congress—the slowest pace since the 82nd Congress in 1951-1952. This mindless obstruction must end and we hope the nomination of Rebecca Haywood can inspire Senate Republicans to finally do the job that the Constitution demands of them.
