WASHINGTON, D.C., May 22, 2014 – Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron issued the following statement today in response to the Senate confirmation of David Barron to serve as a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit:
With his brilliant record of practice, scholarship and public service, David Barron will make an outstanding addition to the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. That’s why his nomination had such broad bipartisan support in the legal community. We are pleased that the Senate has confirmed this highly-qualified nominee.
Confronted with unprecedented Republican obstruction, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and the Senate Democrats still have managed to confirm 22 judges in less than a month—reducing the number of judicial nominees waiting for a floor vote from 31 to 13.
But 19 more nominees are pending in the Senate Judiciary Committee and there are 37 vacancies with no nominee at all. It is high time for all senators to come together to end the vacancy crisis in our federal courts.
