WASHINGTON, D.C., JUNE 30, 2014 – Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. and Conestoga Wood Specialties Corp. v. Burwell:
This is a sad day not only for women’s health but also for religious liberty and all workers’ rights. In another example of extreme overreach by the Roberts Court, the majority has, for the first time, endowed corporations with religious rights and made those rights superior to the rights and needs of women. The decision allows closely-held corporations to withhold basic health insurance coverage from women based on religious objections, and may allow corporations to pick and choose which laws apply to them.
