WASHINGTON, D.C., January 21, 2015: Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron released the following statement in connection with today’s protest in front of the Chamber of Commerce on the fifth anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United:

Five years ago today, in a stunning display of judicial overreach, the Supreme Court abruptly broke with long-settled precedent to fundamentally change the rules of the game in favor of big business.

Citizens United was no isolated case.  It is part of a pattern in which the Roberts Court majority repeatedly pursues an agenda that favors powerful corporate interests and the wealthy at the expense of everyday Americans.

We’ve seen this in everything from the Hobby Lobby decision, placing the desires of some corporations ahead of the vital health needs of women, to case after case in which the majority upholds the pernicious practice of forced arbitration, which undermines vital consumer protection and anti-discrimination laws.

No one has benefitted more from this judicial overreach than the Chamber of Commerce and its members.  So we are proud to join with many other organizations in protesting at the Chamber’s Washington, D.C. headquarters at noon today.

Alliance for Justice, www.afj.org believes that all Americans have the right to secure justice in the courts and to have their voices heard when government makes decisions that affect their lives.
