WASHINGTON, D.C., November 7, 2013: Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron released this statement today in response to President Obama’s decision to nominate Ronnie White to serve as a judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.

We are pleased that President Obama has taken a major step toward rectifying a profound injustice. Fourteen years ago, Missourians were deprived of an outstanding federal judge, when then-Sen. John Ashcroft, R-Mo., blocked President Clinton’s nomination of Ronnie White to be a judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.

Judge White had an outstanding record as the first African American judge of the Missouri Supreme Court. But his nomination fell victim to the same kind of Republican obstruction that now has become routine.

Now President Obama has again nominated Judge White to a seat on the federal bench. In so doing he is taking the first step in righting a wrong done to Judge White – and more important, to the people of Missouri. This time the Senate should do its job and quickly confirm Judge White.
