WASHINGTON, D.C., JANUARY 13, 2014 – Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron issued the following statement today in response to the confirmation of Judge Robert Wilkins to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit:
Judge Robert Wilkins will be an outstanding addition to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. In addition to his other stellar qualifications, he served for many years as a public defender, so he brings much-needed professional diversity to the court.
A fully functioning judiciary is not a gift – it is a basic right.
Because of the time of year, it’s tempting to say that with the confirmation of Judge Wilkins the Senate has given us a belated holiday gift by confirming all three of President Obama’s supremely qualified nominees for the D.C. Circuit.
But a fully functioning judiciary is not a gift – it is a basic right. Now the courageous Senators who voted to reform Senate rules need to keep up the good work.
Scores of other judicial nominees await action by the Senate. Many more vacancies are languishing because home-state Republican Senators have either failed to cooperate with the White House on identifying nominees, or have not returned their blue slips on pending nominees.
Senators need to move swiftly to fill all of the judicial vacancies across the country and restore our nation’s judicial system to full health.
