WASHINGTON, D.C., JULY 28, 2014 – Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron released this statement on the confirmation of Judge Pamela Harris to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit:
Today’s vote is a victory not just for those who live in the states of the Fourth Circuit but for all Americans who cherish the ideal of equal justice under law.
No one has questioned Judge Harris’ stellar qualifications. Instead she faced the kind of hyper-partisan obstruction that has characterized Senate Republicans’ approach to the federal bench. But the obstruction failed – thanks to last year’s Senate rules reform, which allows a simple majority to end a filibuster.
Thanks to Senate rules reform, a partisan minority, bent on putting politics ahead of qualifications, was unable to deprive Americans of an outstanding judge.
Judge Harris’ confirmation also gives the Fourth Circuit a full complement of active judges. All vacancies on the First, Ninth and, of course, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals also have been filled – and none of that would have happened if not for rules reform.
