Media Advisory: AFJ Joins Congressman Christopher Murphy to Announce Supreme Court Ethics Legislation

Alliance for Justice will join Congressman Chris Murphy (CT-5) at a press conference announcing Supreme Court ethics legislation on Tuesday, March 1 at 1:00 pm at the House Triangle. Murphy will introduce a bill to establish a mandatory ethical code for Supreme Court justices and reform the process governing the recusal of justices when they are challenged regarding potential conflicts of interest.

Alliance for Justice Joins Law Professors in Calling for Congress to Mandate Ethics Reforms in the Supreme Court

The professors call on Congress to apply the Code of Conduct that already governs district court and circuit courts of appeals judges to the nation’s highest court. The Code, among other provisions, prevents federal jurists from participating in partisan political activity, as well as any fundraising event. This issue has become relevant as reports have surfaced that Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas apparently participated in a political strategy and fundraising meeting in 2008 sponsored by the billionaire Koch brothers.

Alliance for Justice Recommends Changes to Gulf Coast Recovery Compensation Methodology

Washington, D.C., February 16, 2011– As part of its ongoing effort to promote justice for the individuals struggling to recover from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Alliance for Justice has sent recommendations to the Gulf Coast Claims Facility (GCCF) in response to a request from GCCF administrator Kenneth Feinberg for public comments on his proposed methodology for processing claims and calculating damages.

Alliance for Justice Joins 75 Organizations to Call on Senate to Return to "Regular Order" on Judicial Nominations

Alliance for Justice has joined with a diverse coalition of 75 other organizations in signing an open letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, urging the Senate to return to “regular order” and permit swift confirmation votes on President Obama’s judicial nominees. The letter decries the persistent pattern of obstruction in the last Congress that “led to the lowest percentage of a president’s nominees being confirmed at this point in his presidency than any president in American history.”
