Director of Foundation Advocacy Initiative

Alliance for Justice is a national association of public interest organizations spanning a range of issues, including civil rights, social justice, consumer and environmental protection. Founded in 1979, AFJ leads progressive advocacy and strengthens the progressive movement to ensure robust and equal access to levers of government power.

The Foundation Advocacy Initiative, in collaboration with the Nonprofit Advocacy Project, work to strengthen the capacity of the public interest community to influence public policy and to increase foundation support for nonprofit advocacy.  These programs work with a broad range of tax-exempt organizations, to include public and private foundations, across the country providing legal information through workshops, technical assistance, publications and public education that help them navigate the laws governing advocacy.

POSITION

The Director of Foundation Advocacy Initiative reports to the Director of Advocacy Programs and provides a wide range of activities that advance the program area's activities. Responsibilities include:

·  Keeping up to date with information about the foundation community including understanding trends, issues of concern, and identifying foundation barriers to support of advocacy. 

·  Primary outreach to foundations to create presentation/training opportunities and to develop foundation contacts.

·  Experience with advocacy evaluation and capacity assessment models.

·  Primary responsibility for proposing and developing major new program activities/directions and the re-evaluation of existing project direction/activity on a regular basis.

  • Primary responsibility for suggesting the development of and completing new foundation publications and communication opportunities (e.g. articles, opeds, etc.).
  • Must develop a strong understanding of the legal rules for funding advocacy.
  • Assist in the preparation of foundation advocacy grant proposals and reports
  • Track and, if necessary, act on regulatory and legislative issues related to foundation advocacy.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree and 5 years management experience.
  • Experience conducting training programs and working with foundations.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including the ability to write clearly and quickly.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 15-20 days per year.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of individuals and interests.
  • Experience in and/or knowledge of the nonprofit sector highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of federal tax rules governing foundation advocacy a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to work independently and juggle multiple tasks
  • Commitment to social justice causes.
