2009 Dorot Judicial Selection Project Fellow (DC Office)

Alliance for Justice is a national association of public interest organizations spanning a range of issues, including civil rights, social justice, consumer and environmental protection. Founded in 1979, AFJ leads progressive advocacy and strengthens the progressive movement to ensure robust and equal access to levers of government power.

Through its Judicial Selection Project, Alliance for Justice monitors nominees to the federal bench at all levels and maintains a database and other information on prospective and current judges. The purpose of the Project is to educate the public and the Senate about judicial nominees in order to ensure a fair and independent judiciary. Each year, the Dorot Foundation funds one or more recent law school graduates to serve as fellows in the Judicial Selection Project.

POSITION

The Dorot Fellow reports to the Legal Director. The position's primary responsibilities are to:

  • Monitor federal judicial nominations. Conduct comprehensive research into nominees' records and prepare detailed reports and shorter documents for the press, the public, and the Senate.
  • Analyze and comment on judicial nominations, as well as activities and written work of current judges, for AFJ's blog, Justice Digest.
  • Examine Supreme Court and lower court decisions and write editorial summaries for AFJ's online bulletin, Full Court Press.
  • Update the afj.org website and the judicial selection advocacy website.
  • Attend Senate Judiciary Committee and other hearings, executive committee sessions and votes.
  • Attend and report on meetings of the Coalition for a Fair and Independent Judiciary as needed.
  • Participate in meetings with other local organizations pertaining to issues around judicial selection.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Law degree.
  • Excellent research, writing, and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of individuals and progressive interests.
