Susan Hoechstetter, Senior Advisor for Foundation Advocacy and Evaluation, joined Alliance for Justice to help amplify citizen’s voices in the policy process. She creates programs and materials that help funders to effectively support advocacy. She also develops advocacy and community organizing capacity and evaluation tools like the 2012 Advocacy Capacity Tool.

Sue created the AFJ publication Words to Give By from her interviews with 23 leading advocacy funders about how foundations support strategic advocacy grantmaking. In addition to directing foundation advocacy work at AFJ, Sue has developed an approach to evaluating advocacy which appears in Build Your Advocacy Grantmaking: Advocacy Evaluation and Advocacy Capacity Assessment Tools, and also created a framework and compendium of resources for evaluating community organizing.

Before joining Alliance for Justice, Sue led the National Association of Social Workers’ government relations effort for 13 years, helping them to develop their role in influencing federal policy.

Sue holds a M.S.W. from the University of Pittsburgh and a B.A. in Sociology and Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh.
