Since its establishment in 2015, AFJ’s Dallas-based Texas staff has worked with more 230 nonprofit groups across the state, providing them with Bolder Advocacy training, technical assistance and legal resources. In recent months, demand for our services has increased dramatically in Texas, prompting the decision to open a secondary office in Houston. Houston, the fourth largest city in the U.S. and the largest in Texas, is home to hundreds of nonprofit organizations and provides easy access to Texas’s coastal and border communities. Our new Houston office will address the needs of the region’s diverse nonprofit population by providing bilingual assistance and training to local nonprofits, helping them to amplify the voices of their communities and constituents.
The position will be an integral part of AFJ’s Bolder Advocacy team. This position is based in Houston, Texas.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide technical assistance to nonprofits and foundations on federal tax and federal election law as well as Texas state law and relevant local law that impacts advocacy organizations.
- Travel to, plan, and conduct workshops for nonprofit organizations and foundations on federal tax and election rules, Texas state law, and relevant local laws governing their ability to participate in public policy, as well as on capacity assessment for advocacy and community organizing. Also conduct publicity/outreach and manage logistics for the trainings.
- Write relevant technical assistance guides, blog posts, factsheets, articles, op-eds, regulatory comments, and occasional amicus briefs.
- Master and stay up to date on federal tax and election law for tax exempt organizations and effectively convey the material for a non-legal audience.
- Master and stay up to date on Texas state and local laws on lobbying disclosure, ballot measure, and campaign finance issues impacting advocacy organizations and effectively convey the material for a non-legal audience.
- Outreach to local nonprofits and philanthropic networks to build relationships and develop partnerships.
- Advocate for nonprofits and foundations around legislation, rulemakings, or other policies that might impact their rights to participate in the policymaking process.
- Collaborate with staff from other AFJ programs to deliver appropriate program content, program activities, and special events.
- Support the Development team in fundraising and grant management efforts in Texas.
- Represent the organization at conferences of nonprofits and foundations.
- Be a thought leader by writing and speaking about trends, challenges, opportunities, or other developments regarding advocacy.
- Actively participate in AFJ’s membership program by recruiting new members and developing relationships with existing members.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Law degree, Texas bar membership, and 5 to 7 years of experience.
- Knowledge of federal tax and election law and Texas state lobbying and election laws.
- Excellent public speaking and written communications skills, including the ability to write clearly and quickly (Spanish or other relevant non-English language skills strongly preferred).
- Strong collaborator with an ability to work with a wide range of individuals and interests.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Highly organized and detail oriented.
- Commitment to social justice causes.
- Experience conducting training programs
- Experience with coalition building, community organizing, and working with or at nonprofit organizations preferred.
- Experience with lobbying or advocacy campaigns preferred.
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
This is a full-time position and requires heavy use of computer and phones. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m with option to telework 2 days a month. Some occasional evening and weekend hours may be required. Frequent local and occasional national travel.
