WASHINGTON, D.C., December 7, 2018 – Following today’s announcement by President Trump that he plans to nominate former Attorney General William Barr to once again serve in that role, AFJ President Nan Aron released the following statement:

“No one should be fooled into thinking that William Barr is a moderate. He has expressed a number of deeply troubling opinions, including stating that he believes President Trump was right to fire James Comey and that Hillary Clinton’s activities are more worthy of investigation than any possible Trump-Russia ties. At his confirmation hearing decades ago, he stated that he does not believe the right to privacy extends to reproductive choice. There is every indication that he would steer the Justice Department in an unwelcome direction in which President Trump’s abuses of power could be further enabled and the rights of everyday people would be further threatened. We urge the Senate to probe Barr’s record as thoroughly and scrupulously as possible.”
