WASHINGTON, D.C., April 22, 2021 – Today the House voted to grant the District of Columbia statehood, including voting representation in the House and Senate.

Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron issued the following statement:

“It’s far past time that the 706,000 tax-paying residents of Washington, D.C. be represented in the federal legislature in their own back yard. A majority of those residents are not white, and they are disenfranchised solely because of arbitrary boundaries drawn around their homes. Denying them representation is nothing but a power grab hidden behind a façade of bizarre about what constitutes a state. The United States is either a government of the people, by the people, and for the people — or it’s not.”
