WASHINGTON, D.C., April 20, 2021 – After just one day of deliberations, a jury determined that Derek Chauvin was guilty on all charges brought against him in the death of George Floyd.

Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron issued the following statement:

“Today’s verdict confirms what we all already knew: Derek Chauvin is guilty of murdering George Floyd. The verdict will not bring back George Floyd, nor it will bring back any of the other Black people who have died at police hands, nor will it guarantee guilty verdicts in other cases. But it does offer hope that accountability for police brutality is possible — that the justice system can, in fact, be just in these cases. We must continue the work to ensure our police forces are not militaristic tools for violence and injustice and redefine what protecting public safety truly means. Only keeping racial justice as the focus of our efforts can prevent these abuses from continuing.”
