WASHINGTON, D.C., May 8, 2019 – Following the House Judiciary Committee’s vote today, recommending that Attorney General William Barr be held in contempt of Congress, AFJ President Nan Aron released the following statement:
“This vote today by the House Judiciary Committee was absolutely warranted and necessary, and we’re confident the full House will vote to hold Attorney General Barr in contempt of Congress. From his first day in office, Barr has made it clear that he serves one master — Donald Trump — while the Constitution and the rule of law are merely obstacles to be dealt with or resisted as necessary. Barr’s decision to join the White House is stonewalling Congress’s constitutional right and duty to conduct oversight is the most unseemly thing an attorney general could do, yet Barr has embraced that role with gusto. This is a very sad and dangerous time for our Justice Department and our democracy.”
