WASHINGTON, D.C., April 4, 2022 – Today the Senate Judiciary Committee voted on the confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. Despite the tie vote along party lines, as was expected, Judge Jackson’s nomination will nevertheless proceed to consideration by the full Senate this week.

The committee’s Republican members used the committee’s meeting to rehash their hollow, partisan reasons for opposing Judge Jackson’s nomination, despite the fact many of them have openly admitted she is well-qualified for this nomination.

Democrats on the committee used the opportunity to highlight her incredible credentials and highlight the hypocrisy of their Republican colleagues. Not only is Judge Jackson exceptionally qualified, but by Republicans’ own standards established under the prior administration, she is a nominee that deserves to be confirmed. She has all the qualities Republicans previously deemed essential: outstanding credentials, strong bipartisan support, and a reputation for evenhandedness. Now, unsurprisingly, the goal post has been moved.

Senate Democrats are still on track to complete her final confirmation vote before the end of the week.

Alliance for Justice President Rakim H.D. Brooks issued the following statement:

“Today Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s nomination inched one step closer to her historic confirmation. Everyone agrees that Judge Jackson is incredibly well-qualified for this seat. 58% of Americans support Judge Jackson’s confirmation and multiple Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans, including Senators Chuck Grassley and Ben Sasse, have acknowledged her exceptional qualifications. But nevertheless, they voted against her.

“The petty opposition by Senate Republicans will not soon be forgotten, but more importantly Judge Jackson will be confirmed in spite of it. Judge Jackson’s commitment to excellence throughout her career in public service as a talented jurist, a dedicated public defender, and the first Black woman justice will stand the test of the time. Her legacy on the Supreme Court will positively affect the lives of millions of Americans for a generation. We applaud Chair Durbin for his handling of the nomination process and we look forward to Judge Jackson’s swift confirmation by the full Senate.”
