Kimberly Humphrey, federal court legal director of the progressive advocacy group Alliance for Justice, told Law360 that the goal should be “making sure we are putting attorneys up who are not going to make rulings based on their philosophical beliefs, but based on our laws.”

Circuit courts across the country need more people from different professional backgrounds, according to Humphrey. She pointed to the Fifth Circuit as one of the nation’s most homogenous.

“The recent nominees were pretty much in line with the lack of diversity we’ve seen throughout the decades,” Humphrey said, referring to picks from former Presidents Donald Trump and Obama.
