Washington, D.C., September 11, 2019 – Following the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the nomination of Steven Menashi to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron released the following statement:
“Steven Menashi’s complete lack of transparency at his Senate Judiciary Committee hearing was stunning. He repeatedly refused to answer questions, including about his involvement with Stephen Miller’s immigration working group and his work as Betsy Devos’s right-hand man. Even Chairman Lindsay Graham and Senator John Kennedy admonished Menashi for his lack of candor. The few questions Menashi did choose to answer did nothing to assuage the serious concerns that have been raised about his record. Nominees to the federal bench have a responsibility to demonstrate that they will administer even-handed justice to everyone who appears before them. Nothing Menashi said or did today satisfied that requirement.”
