Nominations Hearing a “Farce”

WASHINGTON, D.C., October 24, 2018 – Republican leadership of the Senate Judiciary Committee went ahead today with a confirmation hearing for Ninth Circuit nominee Eric Miller, which only two Republicans attended because the Senate is currently away on an extended recess. AFJ President Nan Aron released the following statement:

“This recess hearing was a farce. Only two Republican senators showed up, Senator Crapo only bothered to ask the nominees two questions apiece, and the hearing for two lifetime appointments to the Ninth Circuit was over in less than twenty minutes. Senator Hatch’s only contribution was to inform the nominees that he was looking forward to getting them confirmed before the end of the year. What we saw today was Republican senators shirking their constitutional responsibilities in order to pack more of Trump’s judicial nominees onto the federal bench with no scrutiny.”
