WASHINGTON, D.C., April 6, 2017  –  Commenting on the decision of Republicans in the Senate to break the longstanding rule that Supreme Court nominees should attain a threshold of 60 votes, Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron issued the following statement:

“What we saw today was a desperate move by Senate Republicans, who know that breaking the rules is the only way they can ram through the nomination of Donald Trump’s Supreme Court pick. But that should not obscure the real accomplishments of Senate Democrats and people across the country who care about our courts, who in recent weeks have exposed Neil Gorsuch’s ultraconservative record and the great harm he will do to workers, women, persons with disabilities and all Americans who rely on critical legal protections. They showed that a nominee who is so out of touch with our values cannot assume he will be accorded bipartisan support. There is still a chance for conscientious senators to vote No on this nomination itself, and we still believe it would be best for the American people if this nominee were defeated.”
