WASHINGTON, DC, February 5, 2020 – Just moments after voting to acquit President Trump for attempting to rig the election in his favor, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell filed a cloture vote on judicial nominee Andrew Brasher, whose career has included a record hostile to voting rights. Brasher would be elevated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit after serving less than a year as a federal district judge. Alliance for Justice Nan Aron issued the following statement:

“Senate Republicans are trying to rig the election at every turn. After giving Trump a pass on withholding foreign aid in exchange for interference in the election, they immediately want to promote a judge who has made voter suppression a centerpiece of his career. Andrew Brasher has supported gutting the Voting Rights Act, race-based gerrymandering, and laws requiring voter ID, requiring proof of citizenship, and disenfranchising felons. Not only are Senate Republicans fine with Trump cheating in the election, they are rubber-stamping the judges that will buttress his attacks on our democracy.”
