WASHINGTON, DC, May 20, 2020 – Senate Republicans continue to prioritize anti-health care judges over responding to the health and economic concerns caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Today, as COVID-19 deaths approached 100,000, these senators saw fit to continue risking the safety of their colleagues and staffs to hold a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee for Cory Wilson, President Trump’s nominee to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

Cory Wilson called passage of the Affordable Care Act “perverse” and “illegitimate,” specifically objecting to providing access to health care for people without jobs. He has repeatedly and publicly called on the Supreme Court to overturn the ACA, writing, “I hope the Court strikes down the law.” Wilson also opposed expanding Medicaid in his home state of Mississippi, which deprived 100,000 of his fellow Mississippians from accessing care through the program.

In addition to his disturbing positions on voting rights, LGBTQ rights, abortion rights, and gun safety, Wilson has never downplayed his extremely partisan views. He even once wrote that it’s a “rare sighting” to see an “intellectually honest Democrat.”

Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron issued the following statement:

“Cory Wilson is the antithesis of the fair-minded jurists we expect to sit on the federal bench. The president and Senate Republicans are determined to strip health care away from millions of Americans, and Cory Wilson is part of that scheme. No matter how many people have died from this global pandemic, Republicans’ drive to dismantle the Affordable Care Act continues unabated. Should the ACA survive the current Supreme Court case, Cory Wilson will undoubtedly have the opportunity to rule on future challenges. He must be stopped.”
