WASHINGTON, D.C., October 5 –  Following today’s party-line vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee to advance the nominations of Joan Larsen and Amy Coney Barrett for the Sixth and Seventh Circuit Courts of Appeals, respectively, and Eric Dreiband to head the Department of Justice’s civil rights division, AFJ President Nan Aron released the following statement:

“Today’s committee vote is just another step in the GOP strategy to use its majority muscle to ram through as many extreme nominees as possible. Larsen takes an extraordinary view of executive power that would free President Trump to run roughshod over the Constitution in the name of national security. Barrett has troubling writings raising serious questions about whether she will properly apply critical legal precedents in the area of women’s rights. Dreiband has spent much of his legal career opposing the rights of workers. We applaud committee Democrats who stood up against these nominations, and urge the Senate to reject these nominations when they come to the floor.”
