Alliance for Justice (AFJ) is a national association of 120
organizations representing a broad array of civil rights, environmental,
immigration, disability, consumer, workers, women’s, LGBTQ, and other groups
committed to democratic values and the creation of an equitable, just, and free
society.
AFJ has two distinct but complementary programs. Our Justice Program focuses on ensuring that the federal judiciary advances core constitutional values, preserves human rights and unfettered access to the courts, and adheres to the even-handed administration of justice for all. Our Bolder Advocacy (BA) Program works with nonprofits and foundations to help them navigate the rules surrounding 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) and PAC rules so they can be more courageous in their advocacy.
Our federal courts have been packed with ultra-conservative ideologues intent on turning back the clock on our rights and liberties. AFJ’s cutting-edge research, thoughtful analysis, and targeted advocacy efforts make us the “go-to source” on judicial nominees. AFJ influences the judicial selection process through an unparalleled combination of technical expertise; research capacity; a network of legal advocates and grassroots supporters; and well-developed media contacts.
Across the country, assaults on civil and human rights have illustrated the tremendous importance of civic engagement. Nonprofits and the philanthropic community are working to safeguard reproductive rights, access to health care, protections for women, immigrants, formerly incarcerated individuals, consumers, workers, and the environment with an unprecedented outpouring of energy and activism. These groups are also employing a host of advocacy strategies—many for the first time—to protect our democratic principles and institutions. AFJ’s Bolder Advocacy program serves as an indispensable resource for funders and nonprofits seeking to maximize their capacity to use advocacy to realize their missions and meet their goals.
On the Issues
The courts are where major decisions on the issues we care about are happening, and right now many of those decisions are being made by the President’s judges. They often have records that challenge or dismantle the rights and safety of workers, consumers, LGBTQ people, people of color, women, and immigrants. To highlight how the federal judiciary is being altered, we’ve broken it down by issue area.
On the Issues
Bolder Advocacy
Bolder Advocacy promotes active engagement in the policy making process by giving nonprofits and foundations the confidence to advocate effectively and by protecting their right to do so. We help organizations fully understand the rules and become more assertive in their right to pursue their policy goals.

Judicial Nominations
Our country remains in a judicial crisis as it recovers from four years of Republicans packing the federal courts with ultra-conservative ideologues intent on turning back the clock on our rights and liberties. Over 200 far-right judges with demonstrated contempt for our country’s core constitutional values have been confirmed to all levels of the federal judiciary, from the Supreme Court down to the United States district courts. To combat this assault on our courts, AFJ has helped galvanize the largest and most diverse coalition of progressive advocates in our nation’s history and energizing millions of people from all walks of life to prioritize the courts.

Building the Bench
To ensure the Biden Administration can immediately begin to combat the damage Trump has done to our courts, AFJ Building the Bench initiative has already identified outstanding candidates for seats on the federal bench; a strong pool of professionally and demographically diverse individuals with a demonstrated commitment to equal justice for consideration by President Biden.

Supreme Court Cases
The Supreme Court affects everyone in America, every day. AFJ works to make sure that the Supreme Court respects the values of equality and justice for all.
