WASHINGTON, D.C., February 4, 2016, Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron released the following statement in support of the Restoring Statutory Rights Act, which Senator Patrick Leahy introduced today:

In recent years, the Supreme Court has distorted the Federal Arbitration Act—an arcane, ninety-year-old statute—to empower special interests and limit the ability of state and federal elected officials to pass effective laws. Now when large corporations violate laws intended to protect employees or consumers, they can avoid liability by forcing claims into one-sided arbitration proceedings, and laws designed to ensure accountability are rendered useless. Alliance for Justice strongly supports passage of the Restoring Statutory Rights Act, which makes clear that the FAA is not a shield that nullifies civil rights, fair pay, and  consumer protection laws. The bill, introduced by Sen. Patrick Leahy, is an essential step in restoring the fundamental legal rights of everyday Americans and fighting back against the Roberts Court’s efforts to insulate large corporations from the consequences of their misconduct.
