WASHINGTON, D.C., June 29, 2015: Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron released the following statement today in response to the Supreme Court decision in Glossip v. Gross:
Today, the Supreme Court endorsed the barbarism of the death penalty by allowing states to kill prisoners with a drug protocol that Justice Kagan aptly described as “burning alive, from the inside.” Oklahoma has already botched one execution using this protocol, and now the Court has opened the door for more, in Oklahoma and elsewhere. Botched executions, by their very nature, are cruel and unusual.
Judges and justices are called upon to make life and death decisions, a clear reminder of the importance of who sits on our courts. The death penalty is the ultimate punishment, one that can never be undone. In this decision, a majority on the Supreme Court agrees that using ineffective and unscientifically tested drugs to take a prisoner’s life is not ‘cruel and unusual punishment.’ It is indeed a sad day for the Constitution and the rule of law.
Alliance for Justice, www.afj.org believes that all Americans have the right to secure justice in the courts and to have their voices heard when government makes decisions that affect their lives. We are a national association of over 100 organizations, representing a broad array of groups committed to progressive values and the creation of an equitable, just, and free society.
