WASHINGTON, D.C., May 21, 2015: Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron issued the following statement today in response to the confirmation of Judge Jose Olvera, Jr. for the Southern District of Texas and Judge Jill Parrish for the District of Utah:

While we are pleased that the Senate has confirmed two more judges, these votes are long overdue. Today this Republican-controlled Senate doubled its number of judicial confirmations, bringing the grand total to four. Despite ultimately being confirmed unanimously, Parrish and Olvera each waited on the Senate calendar for nearly three months before receiving a confirmation vote. Such delay cannot be tolerated as the “new normal” of judicial confirmations. And even with the confirmation of Judge Olvera, Texas remains the epicenter of rising judicial vacancies. The state still has nine judicial vacancies, seven of which are judicial emergencies. None of these vacancies even have a nominee.

In Texas, Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz must swiftly recommend candidates for the president to nominate. In Washington, the entire Senate must fulfill its constitutional responsibility to timely confirm judges.
